Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - Stocks Plummet; Bonds Surge: The flight-to-safety bid persists. Treasury bonds continued to rise today, as more dour economic data lured investors to the market and deflation fears make bonds look cheap. Longer-term maturities gained the most on the day. Private investors, funds, and foreign investors have all favored the government market. U.S stocks slid to five-year lows today on growing concern over the health of the financial system and the nation’s car industry. The Dow lost 5.1%; the S&P 500 slipped 6.1%.
